Veganism and Marxism Leninism: Liberation is Liberation
I think about this topic all of the time, but have never really attempted to put it into words before, because Animal Liberation when we don't have People’s Liberation seems like putting the cart before the horse, so to speak (yes i know that liberation for animals includes freeing them from labor. Promise, but the saying still tracks). Then I started to think about the nature of the phrase “one struggle” and got this urge to speak about this in long form as the nature of it holds much nuance and historical perspective.
Veganism for me isn't just a diet, it is an entire lifestyle that promises to speak for the creatures of this world that can not speak for themselves. In much the same way as Marxism Leninism is about releasing ALL of the oppressed from their chains, no matter they actual chains or the chains of capital. I hope that you, dear reader, are beginning to see the parallels, but let me slow down a little and talk about understanding and humility and compassion shall we.
Compassion, Humility, and Understanding are the pillars upon which both of these stand and have stood throughout time (as humans understand it). Compassion for that which we do not understand based on the humility to know that our lack of understanding should never strip a thing of our compassion (I promise this makes sense). This triumvent asks everything of us, and in return helps us regain a connection to everything. This isn’t some magical path to superpowers (thanks Scott Pilgrim for giving me that hope), but a journey of the soul we take every day to help build the better world we all strive towards.
Now, this does not mean that anyone not on this path is in anyway bad, but it does mean that if you strive for a world beyond the daily suffering we see, then really learning how these Ideologies really in a lot of ways hold hands should be on your preverbal bucket list. We all have the capacity to do better, and true revolutionaries have the desire to as well. I understand that their are people out there that use veganism as a justification for horrible acts (Isntrael claims the largest vegan population for instance), or fail to understand the true spirit of liberation and they should be fought against at every step of the way.
This is in no way meant to finger wag, or poopoo (hehehehe) anyone for not being at any stage other than the one they currently are, but it is meant to help get the ideas flowing and help in some small way bridge the gaps between these truly similar forms of Liberation Struggle, and help see how capital will use any form of ideological struggle as a way to wedge people apart and keep them from true liberation which can only come (IMHO) once we make the connections that we used to hold dear (ours and nature, nature is us).
